The Tighes Hill Community Group is urging the of Port of Newcastle not to renew the lease of Port Waratah Coal Services on economic grounds.
The lease is due to expire in 2024.
The group will today present a report to the Port authority written almost a year ago by Sydney University economist Dr Cameron Murray which argues the declining throughput of coal at the Port will make the Carrington Coal Terminal uneconomic in coming years.
The residents group says this makes the case for the Port to diversify away from coal and cease stockpiling coal on 25 hectares of port land.
The report sites a community survey in which more than half the respondents wanted the land converted to public space.
