The male driver remains with the medical team on scene, suffering a traumatic head injury, cuts to his hands and legs and suffered a medical episode following the incident.
He will be transported to John Hunter Hospital by road.
The truck driver sustained minor injuries.
The road is closed in both directions with motorists urged to use an alternate route.
Anyone travelling between Kurri Kurri and Maitland are advised to use the Hunter Expressway, John Renshaw Drive and New England Highway instead.
Six Ambulance crews and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called to the incident at around 9.40am.
Emergency service and traffic crews remain on scene.
