Firefighters Expect To Fight Massive Blaze At Weston Aluminium For Days

 BY IAN CROUCH

It could be several days before a massive fire at the Weston Aluminium complex near Kurri Kurri is extinguished

The company's Managing Director believes the fire, which started in pallets of hand sanitiser around 10.00am on Sunday outside a building at the Mitchell Avenue site, was deliberately lit.

Two large buildings have been destroyed and nearby residents have been told to stay away and keep doors and windows closed to protect them from noxious fumes.

More than 180 firefighters have worked through the night, with crews being brought in from Sydney's west to relieve colleagues at the fire ground.

Superintendent Scott Dodson says massive amount of foam and dry material is being used to try and extinguish aluminium dross which is on fire.

"The aluminium dross reacts violently with water when on fire, so we want to extinguish this fire in the safest most efficient way," he said.
