One Person To Hospital After House Fire At Charlestown

 BY IAN CROUCH

One person has been taken to hospital after fire ripped through a home at Charlestown overnight.

Firefighters from Lambton, Belmont, Tingira Heights and Cardiff were called to Wakal Street just before 1.00am on Tuesday to find a fibro and tile home up in flames.

Police say the 5 occupants managed to escape but a male resident suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns and was taken by ambulance to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

It took fire crews more than two hours to extinguish the fire, which caused extensive damage to the home, which police say had been converted into 5 flats.

Police say it appears a stove was left on and is the likely source of the fire.
