Bushfires Threaten Homes In The Lower Hunter

 BY IAN CROUCH

More strike teams are heading to the Lower Hunter on Friday morning to relieve weary firefighters battling a huge bushfire near Cessnock.

Three separate fires joined to create a dangerous fast-moving fire which threatened the townships of Abermain, Kurri Kurri, South Weston and Pelaw Main.

The fire has burnt through more than 600 hectares leaving Teasdale Tyres at Weston in ruins along with a number of homes.

Although the fire is listed at Advice level, work is continuing to bring the blaze under control.

Inspector Ben Shepherd from the Rural Fire Service says the exact number of properties lost is yet to be determined.

"We have what we call building impact assessment teams. They'll move across the fire ground today just trying to establish what exactly has been lost," he said.

Six schools are closed on Friday due to the fire threat.

They include Abermain, KurriI Kurri, Edwards, Pelaw Main and Weston Public Schools as well as Stanford Merthyr Infants School.

Almost 1600 properties remain without power around Abermain, Weston, Sawyers Gully and Neath. Ausgrid hopes to have complex repairs competed by 10.00am on Friday.

Meanwhile, a fire which threatened homes at West Wallsend has also been downgraded to Advice level overnight and is now under control after burning through more than 60 hectares.

Many residents were forced to flee their homes but there are no reports of property damage.

Both the M1 Pacific Motorway and Leggetts Drive at Richmond Vale have re-opened to traffic.

Crews will again be on alert on Saturday, with an elevated fire risk expected.

Three Charged Over Drug, Firearm, and Pursuit Offences in The Hunter

BY OLIVIA DILLON

Raptor Squad North detectives have charged three people in the Hunter with drug supply and police pursuit offences.

Earlier this year, detectives commenced an investigation into the supply of prohibited drugs and firearms in the region.

Following extensive inquiries, at about 9:20am yesterday, police executed a search warrant at a home at Kurri Kurri, where they seized methylamphetamine and thousands of dollars in cash.

Two women aged 28 and 23 were arrested.

A short time later, police attempted to talk to a 24-year-old man on Groves Road at Bennetts Green, however he allegedly fled the scene in a car.

Two short pursuits were initiated in the Lake Macquarie area before they were terminated due to safety concerns.

The man was surrounded and arrested a short time later at a property in Edgeworth, where police seized knuckle dusters and a small amount of illegal drugs.

All three offenders were refused bail to appear in court today.

One Nation Candidates Call for the Re-Opening of Hunter Police Stations

BY OLIVIA DILLON

The One Nation Candidate for Wallsend is remaining strong in his push to re-open the Wallsend and Beresfield Police Stations.

Pietro Di Girolamo, is still seeking accurate data from local and state authorities on crime rates across the electorate.

He said, despite reaching out to officers at the Waratah local command on three occasions, he's been unable to get a hold of any specific statistics for the Hunter region.

"It seems clear to me that the bureaucracy, the police command, is not prepared to provide information to me as the local candidate. I don't know why; they haven't given me a reason."

He also said after a string of break-ins and harassments in the Wallsend area in particular, residents are looking for something to be done.

"The incumbent (Sonia Hornery MP) says having more cops on the street is the way to go. I disagree with that statement. I believe having a point of presence right in the heart of Wallsend is a deterrent for someone who wants to cause malicious damage or attempt break-and-enters," Mr Di Girolamo said.

The Candidate added almost everyone he's spoken to in the community has been in favour of re-opening the facilities.

The party's candidate for Kurri Kurri Quintin Blake, is also fighting to re-open the police station at Kurri Kurri, and is set to issue a public statement on it's progress tomorrow.

Mulletfest's fifth anniversary big success for COVID recovery

BY DAKOTA TAIT

The Kurri Kurri Mulletfest has celebrated its fifth anniversary, for the first weekend after most COVID restrictions were dropped by the State Government.

Masks were off and mullets were out, with the controversial hairstyles competing in categories such as everyday, extreme, grubby, ranga, and vintage, as well as junior competitions.

Just over $3,000 was raised for the Mark Hughes Foundation at the event.

Mulletfest Founder Laura Johnson says it was an impressive showcase on Saturday.

"I tell you what, the mullet quality is spectacular," Ms Johnson said. "You can't ask for better."

"They're really upping their game now, and I think having heats all over Australia, we're going to continue to see improvements in our mullet quality throughout the year."

"There was lots of, what I would call hairdresser-intervention, so quite a bit of colour, quite a bit of barbering and design work."

The celebration saw coverage as far as the UK and the United States, and the event's now set to tour the State, as well as Queensland, Victoria, and the Northern Territory, through to October.

An international category also saw competitors from Belgium and Sweden head down to Kurri Kurri.

Ms Johnson says it's exciting to be able to bring such a big event to the Hunter, and from there, to the world stage.

"Hospitality workers are really being pushed outside their comfort zone to be flexible, and to really think outside the square about how they can safely bring people together," Ms Johnson said.

"That was our goal at Mulletfest headquarters, how do we continue with our goals, which is to create a tourism injection and to bring people together, but do it in a COVID-safe way, so that we're not putting anyone in danger, we're not putting anyone at risk."

New energy data suggests Kurri Kurri gas plant doesn't add up

BY DAKOTA TAIT

New data has put a damper on the recently-approved Kurri Kurri gas plant project, with concern it doesn't add up in the wider energy picture.

The Climate Council found gas contributed just 1.5 percent of the State's energy in 2021, the lowest level in 15 years.

Renewable sources, however, supplied 24.6 percent, or almost a quarter of the energy generated in New South Wales.

Across Australia, renewables provided five times as much power as gas.

The Climate Council's Greg Bourne, a former BP Australasia President, says the Hunter Power Project doesn't make sense from either a commercial or environmental point of view.

"It really doesn't stack up, and many people have actually said, this does not make commercial sense and it's more sort of driven by the politics and so on," Mr Bourne said.

"What we're seeing everywhere, is gas as a percentage in the mix, going down and down and down."

"What we think logically should be happening, and we're seeing it elsewhere as well, is more batteries, more storage, more hydro power, virtual power plants, and demand management, doing what is needed as we go forward."

"So our belief is that Kurri Kurri need not go ahead."

The Federal Government has long insisted the Kurri Kurri plant is necessary for both long-term energy supply and affordability with the closure of Liddell Power Station in 2023.

Labor also said their government would endorse the project, if it began operation on 30 percent hydrogen, after opposing the project for years.

But Mr Bourne says both the Government and the Opposition need to look toward the future.

"If you build Kurri Kurri with turbines that basically can only take a small amount of hydrogen, then pretty sure, the plant is going to be redundant and obsolete almost before it's built," Mr Bourne said.

"If you build it, so that it is completely ready for up to 100 percent hydrogen or hydrogen plus biogas, then it may be useful, and that's actually a commercial decision."

The data comes as AGL says its Bayswater Power Plant could close as early as 2030, due to pressures over emissions and the rise of renewable sources.

It's announced a three year closure window between the end of the decade and 2033, despite previously aiming to shut its doors in 2035.

Federal Labor swing round on Kurri Gas Plant, but with green hydrogen future

BY DAKOTA TAIT

Federal Labor says it will now support the controversial Kurri Kurri Gas Plant project, with the understanding its government would ask Snowy Hydro to operate on 30 percent green hydrogen.

Under its plan, the plant will transition to 100 percent green hydrogen usage, it's hoped by 2030.

With additional investment, the Hunter Power Project is capable of running on 30 percent hydrogen, dependent on fuel logistics, although in its current form under the Federal Government, the plant will likely run initially on just 10 percent hydrogen.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese told reporters in Kurri Kurri on Tuesday, the Government couldn't afford to let the region's renewable potential slip away.

"I see the Hunter as potentially a green hydrogen powerhouse for Australia and the world," Mr Albanese said. "Not just producing it here, but exporting it internationally."

"The problem with this Government, is it's scared of the present, but terrified of the future."

Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change Chris Bowen says it's a necessary investment in the region.

"The Hunter Valley, which has powered Australia for so long, for so many generations, will power Australia into the future, under an Albanese Labor Government," Mr Bowen said.

"What we're doing today, is ensuring that Kurri Kurri is at the center of the hydrogen revolution, which is about to take place right around the world."

Work is due to begin on the plant in coming months, with completion projected for late 2023.

The $600 million, 660 megawatt generator has long been touted as critical to maintain energy reliability and sustainability once Liddell Power Station closes.

It's understood the Federal Government intends to pipe gas from the Sydney-Newcastle pipeline to power the project.

But Mr Albanese says things need to happen in an intelligent way.

"We need to do something that ensures there's energy security, but which also ensures it's done in a way that's consistent with moving towards net zero by 2050," Mr Albanese said.

"A way that drives economic growth and drives jobs."

Left to right: Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon, Federal Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese, Paterson MP Meryl Swanson, Hunter Candidate Dan Repacholi, Shortland MP Pat Conroy, and Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change Chris Bowen.

But the Opposition is facing backlash from both sides of politics.

The Federal Energy Minister described the move as a last minute backflip.

Labor has spent years voicing their opposition to the project on both economic and environmental grounds.

The Gas Free Hunter Alliance pushed the State Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean to block the proposal late last year.

Co-coordinator Fiona Lee says there's no need to invest taxpayer money in dying industries.

"It's very important that there's long-term sustainable jobs in future-focused industries," Ms Lee said.

"However, we do consider it very important that all money should be committed to a rapid transition away from fossil fuels, and this plan will run on gas and diesel for the first seven years."

The Hunter Power Project was approved by the NSW Department of Planning in late December, in an embarrassing email bungle.

Ms Lee says at the end of the day, the project doesn't add up for either party.

"The Australian Energy Market Operator itself, again, has recently said, that there's no new gas generators required until about 2030," Ms Lee said.

"So why don't we wait until such time as this plant is actually needed, and then build it on 100 percent renewable-powered green hydrogen."

Firefighters Expect To Fight Massive Blaze At Weston Aluminium For Days

 BY IAN CROUCH

It could be several days before a massive fire at the Weston Aluminium complex near Kurri Kurri is extinguished

The company's Managing Director believes the fire, which started in pallets of hand sanitiser around 10.00am on Sunday outside a building at the Mitchell Avenue site, was deliberately lit.

Two large buildings have been destroyed and nearby residents have been told to stay away and keep doors and windows closed to protect them from noxious fumes.

More than 180 firefighters have worked through the night, with crews being brought in from Sydney's west to relieve colleagues at the fire ground.

Superintendent Scott Dodson says massive amount of foam and dry material is being used to try and extinguish aluminium dross which is on fire.

"The aluminium dross reacts violently with water when on fire, so we want to extinguish this fire in the safest most efficient way," he said.

Locals Still Not Convinced Of No Cuts To Health Services in Cessnock

BY TAYLA LEE

Maitland Hospital and John Hunter Health Precinct are currently undergoing development which locals fear could lead to the closure of smaller, regional hospitals.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard has assured the public that there are no plans to close any health facilities at this stage despite the rising rumors in the community.

Rob Doherty from Friends of Kurri Kurri Hospital doubts this however, claiming he expects a change of mind after the completion of the hospitals.

"He said there's no plans at this stage.

"Well watch this space February next year when the new Maitland hospital is commissioned," Mr Doherty said.

A parliamentary petition has been created to gain support in maintaining Kurri Kurri Hospital which has seen success with over 800 digital signatures and hundreds of signatures coming from the community.

Completion of Maitland Hospital could see it open to the public, taking in patients as soon as early 2022.
