Hunter Valley residents have taken to Mona Vale in protest of a proposed gas power plant for Kurri Kurri.
The Gas Free Hunter Alliance (GFHA) protested outside NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes' office this morning as he announces the 'imminence' of the power plants construction.
A petition with 55, 000 signatures against the plant was presented to Mr Stokes maintaining the power plant is an 'outdated' process of producing opportunity.
The GFHA co-coordinator Carly Phillips is concerned about the pollution that last century's technology produces while focusing her attention on the job opportunities that renewable energy has.
The $600 million project is said to create 10 jobs as a result of its construction, while Phillips argues this does not justify the amount of money being spent.
“The building of any new gas infrastructure is entirely incompatible with NSW and Federal Government targets of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, never mind the fact that very few local jobs would be created,” Ms Phillips said.
Following on from the Paris Climate Agreement this states that no new gas infrastructure can be built around the world if we were to commit to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees by 2050.
