Two Men To Face Court Accused of Violent Home Invasion And Robbery At Merewether

BY IAN CROUCH

Two men accused of a violent home invasion at Merewether are due to front court today.

It's alleged the pair forced their way into a Watkins Street unit at about 1.00pm yesterday and bashed a 64-year-old man with a metal tyre lever, leaving him with serious head injuries.

He managed to make his way to front of the unit complex where a passer-by called for help

Police say the men then robbed a taxi driver of his takings and demanded the PIN for his ATM card.

The taxi driver alerted a member of the public who came to his aid.

Newcastle police then went to the Prince Of Wales Hotel on Morgan Street where they arrested two men aged 24 and 34.

They've been charged with aggravated break and enter, commit felony, reckless wounding, robbery and take/detain for advantage.

The men have been refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court today.
