Police have launched a critical incident investigation following the death of a teenage boy in Newcastle.
Officers were called to the Lambton Pool in Durham Road just after 5.00pm Tuesday following reports the 17-year-old had assaulted an employee.
Police say a number of witnesses restrained the boy until officers arrived.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to the John Hunter Hospital, where he later died.
A critical incident investigation is launched when a member of the public dies in a police operation, however it's understood officers were not directly involved with the incident, but were in the vicinity.
The pool is expected to re-open at 9.00am on Wednesday after being in lockdown for several hours.
Police are expected to address the media later this morning.
