A young family has escaped with their lives after fire engulfed a home at Bonnells Bay on Thursday night.
Newcastle Fire Command says they were called to the two-level home in Wood Street at about 6.45pm to find a fire which is believed to have started in a caravan adjacent to the property had quickly spread to the house.
Police say the six occupants of the home were evacuated without injury.
Fire and Rescue Acting Superintendent Matt Sigmund says crews mounted a search and rescue operation following initial reports of a person trapped inside.
"Subsequent inquires confirmed all persons had evacuated the dwelling," he said.
It's taken more than 5 hours to extinguish the blaze.
Two crews remain at the scene on Friday morning to extinguish hot spots.
A crime scene has been established, and police and fire investigators will be called in later this morning to determine the cause of the fire.
