A legacy of service is being remembered after the passing of Sister Carmel Hanson

 BY CLAUDIA PERRY

Founder of the House of Hospitality and advocate for the homeless Sister Carmel Hanson has died at the age of 79.

The House of Hospitality is a ministry of the Sister of St. Joseph's, Lochinvar which she was a Congressional Leader of for 33 years.

Carmel joined the covenant at the age of 18, working in numerous professions such as Psychology and Law, she also opened a safe shelter for men struggling with addiction in Adamstown before evolving into the House of Hospitality in Broadmeadow.

Carmel, over her years of service, helped women and children fleeing domestic violence, asylum seekers and those battling with addiction.

It is Carmel's life-long devotion to service that the Hunter and beyond pauses to tribute and remember.
