BY IAN CROUCH

A fire which severely damaged a home at Cessnock this morning is being treated as suspicious.

The male occupant of the fibro and iron roof home in Stephen Street has told police he was woken by a smoke alarm at 3.15 and managed to escape before the fire took hold.

Three fire crews from Cessnock and Bellbird took 2 hours to extinguish and mop up the fire.

Forensic officers and detectives will commence an investigation later this morning to determine how the fire started.
