A man who stabbed a fellow psychiatric patient to death at Morisset Hospital in 2017 has been sentenced to a maximum of 23 years in gaol.
In a sentencing hearing held this morning, Acting Justice Peter Hidden determined there was a causal link between Thomas Dillon Stone's schizophrenic illness and the offence and sentenced him to a maximum of 23 years in gaol with a non-parole period of 17 years and six months.
27-year-old Stone pleaded guilty late last year to stabbing his flatmate, 41-year-old Robert Mitchell, three times with a kitchen knife in the cottage they shared on hospital grounds on February 6th 2017.
The then-25-year-old disposed of the weapon by throwing it into Lake Macquarie before calling the police.
Mr Stone told triple zero operators he stabbed Mr Mitchell because he "felt like it."
Thomas Stone will be eligible for parole in August 2034.
