First Hunter River Prawns Up For Charity Auction

BY IAN CROUCH

The Commercial Fisherman's Co-op expects to draw people from across the state this morning -- as they auction off the season's first box of Hunter River prawns.

Bidding will start from 8am at the Newcastle Fisherman's Co-Op -- the auction will also be broadcast live to Sydney Fish Market so locals there can get in on the bid.

It's an idea which hasn't been run for many years and the Co-Op is are hoping to emulate the success of the cherry, mango and avocado farmers, who raise thousands of dollars each year for charity with the first box of produce.

All funds will go to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and Chairman Ross Fidden says they're aiming high with the figures.

"I've heard some interesting numbers - you know, we're hoping to raise $25,000 has been mentioned, but I don't think it will achieve that - but I think $10,000 is within reality", he said.
