Police have been forced to use a Tazer to subdue a man who allegedly threatened an elderly woman with a knife at a Morisset supermarket.
The 46-year-old entered the Morisset Square Shopping Centre in Yambo Street just before 2.30 on Thursday afternoon and purchased a knife, but as he was leaving allegedly held the knife to the back of a 75-year-old woman.
Shoppers alerted a female police officer who'd just waked into the supermarket and she drew her gun, ordering him to drop the weapon.
The man refused to comply and the officer commenced negotiations with him.
Further police arrived with one officer drawing his Taser.
Police will allege the man let the woman go but continued waving the knife
while attempting to leave the mall.
He was tasered by police causing him to fall to the ground where officers
quickly moved in to make the arrest.
He was taken to Toronto Police Station where he was assessed by NSW
Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment
to an injury to his head.
He was later released and returned to Toronto Police Station where he was
charged with armed with intent, use weapon to avoid apprehension, wield knife
in public place, affray and common assault.
He was refused bail and will appear in Toronto Local Court today (Friday
24 November 2017).
