Belmont Man Charged With Assaulting Paramedics And Police

BY IAN CROUCH

A man is due to face court today accused of assaulting paramedics and police at Belmont.

Paramedics were called to a unit in Belstone Avenue just before 2.00am on Sunday to help a pregnant woman who'd gone into labour.

However, the woman's 22-year-old partner allegedly became violent when she told him he couldn't go with her in the ambulance to hospital.

Police say he assaulted one paramedic and threatened both before kicking the ambulance several times as it drove away to hospital.

Officers arrived at the unit a short time later and arrested the man after a short struggle - they also found a knife and a tomahawk on him during the arrest.

He's been charged with several offenses including obstruct or hinder ambulance officer by act of violence and assault police.
