Hunter waters make for Marine Rescue's second busiest year on record

Marine Rescue NSW has seen its second busiest year on record, with more than 1,147 of the state's 3,905 rescues in the Hunter and Central Coast region.

229 of the local rescues in the 2021-22 financial year were potentially life-threatening situations.

The Lake Macquarie unit saw more than half of those, tallying 584 rescues.

Here's a breakdown for all of the local Marine Rescue units:

  • Lake Macquarie - 584
  • Port Stephens - 226
  • Central Coast - 166
  • Newcastle - 66
  • Lemon Tree Passage - 53
  • Tuggerah Lakes - 42
  • Norah Head - 10
