Hunter man charged after Federal investigation into child abuse material

BY DAKOTA TAIT

A Hunter man has been arrested by the Australian Federal Police and charged over a number of child abuse-related offences.

The 26-year-old is expected to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Friday, after being arrested the day prior.

The investigation began after the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation received a report from the United States’ National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about a user uploading child abuse material to several online platforms.

Australian investigators allegedly linked the man to the accounts uploading the material.

A search warrant was executed at his home on Thursday, with investigators seizing a mobile phone and laptop that allegedly contained child abuse material.

The digital devices will be subject to further forensic examination.

He faces seven charges in total - two relating to the use of a carriage service to transmit child abuse material, two relating to the use of a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, two relating to the possession or control of child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service, and another of the use of a carriage service to access child abuse material.

The man faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in gaol.
