A Lake Macquarie community group is welcoming a review of Delta Electricity's application to allow Vales Point Power Station to be exempt from tighter emissions controls for another 5 years.
Future Sooner says research carried out by Dr Ben Ewald from the University of Newcastle shows around 650 children on the Central Coast and Lake Macquarie have asthma because of toxic emissions of Nitrogen Dioxide from the local power station.
The group says Vales Point is allowed to emit 10 times the amount of the gas compared to other countries.
Delta Electricity says it's licence has already been amended to tighten emission controls and a federally funded $8.7 million dollar upgrade will further reduce emissions by 3 per cent.
The EPA has agreed to review the emissions exemption application following lobbying from the community.
