Man Charged Over Frenzied Stabbing Attack At Belmont

BY IAN CROUCH

A man's been charged with attempted murder over a frenzied stabbing attack at BELMONT overnight.

Police say the 64-year-old has been involved in an ongoing neighbour dispute with a 65-year-old woman who lives in the same block of units on Belstone Avenue.

The man knocked on the woman's door last night and, after a short discussion, allegedly started stabbing the woman with a knife.

She suffered serious lacerations to her face and hands and was taken to the John Hunter Hospital where she's expected to undergo surgery today.

The man left the unit and returned to his home where he called police.

He was arrested and taken to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with attempted murder.

He's been refused bail to front Newcastle Local Court today.
