Family Of Rebecca Maher Want Answers Over Her Death In Police Custody

BY IAN CROUCH

The family of the indigenous woman who died in police custody at Maitland has spoken out.

Police believe Rebecca Maher was heavily intoxicated when they picked her up at Cessnock on July 19.

She was detained at Maitland Police Station where she was found dead in her cell 5 hours later.

Her family has been shown a report which says no illegal drugs or alcohol were found in her system.

It's also been revealed the 36-year-old wasn't given any medical attention.

Rebecca's mother, Debbie has told the ABC they want answers.

"Duty of care wasn't applied to Rebecca.....I asked them straight away was there medical staff brought in to it - was she assessed, and they said no," she said.
