Woman Charged Over Alleged Assault Of Elderly Woman

BY IAN CROUCH

Police have charged a 50-year-old woman accused of a sickening assault on an elderly woman in Newcastle's C.B.D.

Police say the 84-year-old was walking along Hunter Street at about 2.30 on Friday afternoon when the younger woman approached her from behind and struck her in the shoulder, causing her to fall heavily to the ground, hitting her head on the footpath.

She was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment of a fractured hip and is now in a stable condition.

Inquiries led to the arrest of a 50-year-old woman the following day.

She was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court charged with reckless wounding causing grievous bodily harm.

Police say the two women didn't know each other.
