Alleged car thief detained by Mayfield resident

A person's been charged after allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle and being detained by a member of the public.

About 12:07am on Wednesday morning, a resident in Mayfield was alerted to a person attempting to break into their house by CCTV cameras. 

The resident contacted police, who attended the scene shortly after, though the alleged culprit had already fled.

At 12:45am, it's alleged a 19-year-old person entered two vehicles parked in the driveway of a different house in Mayfield. 

The victim was awoken by noise and detained the person who was attempting to steal their vehicle. 

Neighbours heard a commotion and contacted police while assisting the victim. 

Police arrived shortly after and identified him as being responsible for the previous attempted break and enter a few streets away. 

The person was arrested and taken back to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with a number of offences.

They were refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court.

At the time of the offence, the person was on supervision order with community corrections.
