Greyhound Death At Maitland Prompts Call For Better Welfare Regulation

 BY IAN CROUCH

Greyhound welfare advocates say the latest death of a racing dog at the Maitland track exposes a gap in welfare regulation.

The Coalition for Protection of Greyhounds says 3-year-old Peyton May had to be euthanased on Monday night after breaking her leg in a collision with other dogs during race 4.

They say Peyton May had run eight races in four weeks during May, which is twice a week and doesn't allow the dog to fully recover.

The group says the greyhound industry should follow the British example, where dogs must have three clear days rest unlike Australia, which requires only one rest day.
