A man is due to face court over an alleged stabbing incident at Mayfield.

Emergency services were called to the Onyx Espresso Bar on Maitland Road just after 2.30pm on Wednesday to reports a 27-year-old woman had been stabbed in the chest.

Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey says police and paramedics were confronted with a horrific scene.

"The knife was embedded in her chest and remained in her chest when emergency services arrived. She was rushed to the John Hunter Hospital by Ambulance under police escort," he said.

It's understood the alleged victim is the chef at the cafe - she remains in intensive care at the John Hunter Hospital.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man in a nearby street shortly after the incident - he's reported to be a co-worker of the injured woman.

He's been charged with attempted murder and wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and has been refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court today (Thursday 13 May 2021).

Police say they are yet to establish a motive for the attack.
