BY IAN CROUCH

A teenage girl has suffered serious burns after a fire pit explosion at Wallsend.

Police say the 15-year-old and two other girls were sitting around the fire pit at a home on Fryar Street at about 12.20am on Monday when a jerry can containing fuel was accidentally knocked over.

The girl has been airlifted to Sydney's Westmead Children's Hospital - the other two were taken to the John Hunter with minor burns.
