In a huge win for Gloucester residents, the proposed Rocky Hill Coal Mine has been blocked in court.
The Land and Environment Court handed down judgement this morning, dismissing Gloucester Resources' appeal to overturn the state government's rejection of the mine.
Residents have fought hard to stop the open-cut mine, which was set to be built just 900m away from the residential area of Forbesdale.
Groundswell Gloucester Chair Julie Lyford said the community is ecstatic about the decision.
"I just want to say thank you so much to the Environmental Defenders office, David Morris and the crew, and our barrister Robert White who did a fantastic job in representing our small community," said Julie Lyford.
The decision comes two years after the NSW Government first rejected the proposal, and follows a two-week hearing held in August.
"This is a great win not only for the Gloucester community, our health and the environment, and our scenic, beautiful valley but also for the climate and for our future generations as well,
Actually, for the generations that are living right now, because we are experiencing climate effects right now."
