The Marine Parks Association is welcoming a decision by Huon Aquaculture to abandon its controversial kingfish farm off the coast of Port Stephens.
The company entered into a partnership with the NSW government in 2017 to conduct a 5 year trial of the farm but has now decided to walk away from the project with 3 years still to go.
The project ran into problems when 20,000 kingfish escaped from their pen during rough seas in January last year, posing a threat to other fish and marine life.
Marine Parks Association chairman, Frank Future says he was always sceptical about the fish farm's location right in the middle of a habitat protection zone.
