Green Light For Newcastle's Light Rail

BY IAN CROUCH

Newcastle's light rail project is a step closer, with the state government giving the final tick of approval.

The government has responded to public feedback, announcing a number of changes to the original plan.

Instead of raised tracks, the line will be built flush with the road along the route.

The track alignment at Worth Place has been altered to ensure a smoother turn and quicker travel time, and a second track will be built across Stewart Avenue near the new Wickham Interchange to reduce disruption when future light rail extensions are built.

The government has also announced local rail manufacturer, Downer E.D.I has been appointed to deliver the fixed infrastructure for the light rail project.
