Singleton Pound Animals Left In The Cold

BY LAUREN KEMPE

Despite over a year of community persistence to improving Singleton Pound, Boarding Kennel - Cattery and Pound Reform Australia say little has been done by Singleton Council to protect the welfare of its animals.

There are currently six pen areas for dogs exposed to cold winds and rain, and the present animal shelter was only intended to be a temporary facility by Council.

A number of local advocates asked Singleton Council for a barrier to reduce the effects of harsh weather on the animals and allow direct adoption in July last year, but Cattery Pound Reform Australia say little has been done since.

Animal Welfare Advocate Jayne Cvetanoski says the suffering of these animals needs to stop, and council should be taking more responsibility for the pound's conditions.

"Council supposedly said that they put a tarp up last year to stop the wind from howling through the kennels, but there's been no confirmed sightings or any reports of this.

"They should be putting in place something more permanent; the pound animals out there are still suffering from the cold winds and nothing seems to be getting done."

Singleton Council have ensured they only work with rehoming organisations registered under the Companion Animals Act, to guarantee animals are going to good homes.

In a written statement, Singleton Council said,

"Council is progressing investigations for a new facility, and a report will be presented to Council's meeting in September with site and design options as well as a recommended funding strategy."

Members of the community are being encouraged to sign a petition to improve the pounds conditions at http://change.org/p/singleton-council-new-pound-for-singleton. There are currently over 2,600 petition signs.
