Newcastle Police have issued a warning not to provide personal details over the phone to callers claiming to be from the local police station.
Newcastle Police station received several calls on Thursday from people saying they were returning calls from legitimate phone numbers at the station.
It follows news of a police station scam doing the rounds in Sydney.
Police say calls from local stations appear as private numbers on your phone and any calls from an actual phone number purporting to be from police are a scam.
Some victims have been told they owe money for an unpaid fine.
