A woman has died and four other people have been taken to hospital following a serious crash at Catherine Hill Bay.

Four ambulance crews and a medical team were tasked to the incident at Cam's Wharf Road just before 8 o'clock Tuesday morning.

Police say a Honda sedan travelling north collided with a southbound BMW sedan, a female passenger in the Honda was treated at the scene but could not be saved.

Paramedics say four elderly patients were travelling in one of the cars, three of them were taken to the John Hunter Hospital.

One passenger is reportedly in a serious condition with chest injuries, the other two have been treated for minor cuts and bruises.

One person was travelling in the other car with no other passengers.

The Pacific Highway is currently closed to Southbound traffic and 2 of 3 Northbound lanes have been reopened.

Northbound motorists are being escorted past the site while those travelling South are being diverted into Flowers Drive.
