An eagle-eyed passer by and quick work by firefighters has prevented a major fire at Newcastle's Number One Sportground.
A member of the public noticed smoke and flames coming from the back of the main grandstand just after 9.30 last night.
Firefighters from Newcastle, Lambton, Carrington and Merewether were quickly on scene and extinguished the blaze before it could take hold.
The fire destroyed a small number of plastic seats at the rear of the grandstand - the grandstand itself did not sustain any damage.
The cause of the fire is still being determined.
