Maitland Road upgrades now underway

BY LAUREN FREEMANTLE

The journey through Maitland Road and Duffie Drive at Cessnock is set to become smoother, with upgrade work kicking off today.

$2.9 million has been awarded to the project in a bid to make the intersection safer and alleviate traffic congestion.

It comes after 10 crashes were recorded within 50 metres of the intersection over the past 5 years, with eight of those resulting in injury.

Cessnock City Council will carry out the work, which involves building a single lane roundabout and improving street lights.

The right turn from Maitland Road into Duffie Drive is currently closed.

Construction is expected to be complete by late July, while roadwork conditions are in place, including a 40km/h speed limit.
