BY IAN CROUCH

Newcastle University student, Matt Graham has opened Australia's medal count at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

The 23-year-old bagged a silver medal in moguls finals.

As the field was cut from 20 to 12 and then 6, Graham remained in contention.

A final run of 82.57 had him in first place, with the world No. 3 pumping his fist as he crossed the line.

But, he was overtaken at the death by the man considered the world's best, Canada's Mikael Kingsbury.

Graham paid tribute to the world No. 1.

"He is an amazing athlete," Graham said.

"With all that he has achieved, all the World Cup victories and world championship victories, a silver medal at the last game and now the cherry on the top with a gold medal, it has now solidified him as the greatest ever."
