Maitland Councillor to moo-ve motion to curb rogue cows

BY LAUREN FREEMANTLE

Over the past two years, residents of Thornton have put up with a herd of cows continually wandering onto the road.

The cattle belong to a local property owner who, after "words" from Council, refuses to repair gaps in the fence which encloses the animals- allowing them to escape.

The cows have been eating the grass at Somerset Park Sporting Fields, leaving droppings in their wake and posing a risk to drivers as they stand on the road.

Maitland Councillor Philip Penfold plans to table the issue at next week's Council meeting, and says enough is enough.

"I expect what it might take is for Council to take action on the fence, and then seek to collect reimbursement from the property owner who is responsible for that fence," he says.

"The main thing is obviously that we act in the best interests of the people of Thornton, to make sure that cars aren't likely to impact the cattle walking on these roads."
