Those in the Newcastle City area may be unknowingly surrounded by some of the brightest minds from around the world as Historians flock to the region for the annual Australian Historical Association conference. About 340 historians have been invited to take part in the event this week with a new highlight taking place tonight.
Putting an unusual yet fun spin on a classic pub crawl, local historians Julie McIntyre and Kate Ariotti are leading the group in what they call a "Booze and Stories Walking Tour". The introductory event involves stops that hold some kind of significance to Newcastle, with a few refreshments along the way. Dr McIntyre says that the city was built on coal, steel and a love of beer so the crawl will actively uncover the rich history to be found.
Not only will the activity highlight the past, but really show what the town has become. Planned stops include the Edwards, the Star Hotel, the FogHorn Brewhouse and of course the largest KFC in Australia, which happens to be sitting on important Indigenous artefacts.
If your favourite bar seems unusually crowded tonight, you may be sitting on a treasured piece of Newcastle's history.
