Man Charged Over Alleged Service Station Robberies In Newcastle

A man is due to front court today accused of robbing two service stations in Newcastle overnight.

Police say a man entered a service station on Parry Street at Newcastle West at about 7.30pm on Sunday and asked the store attendant to use the restroom.

When he returned it's alleged he had his face covered and demanded money from the worker, taking an amount of cash before leaving.

In a separate incident, a man entered a service station on Maitland Road at Mayfield just before 11.00pm and threatened the attendant who activate the alarm and alerted police.

The man was able to unlock the doors and fled.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 24-year-old man at a unit on Fowler Street at Hamilton South.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with demand property with menaces, robbery and breach of bail. He was also charged with common assault and shoplifting for unrelated matters.

He's been refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court today (Monday 19 May, 2025) .

 

Man Arrested After Dramatic Pursuit Through Newcastle West

A man is due to face court today (Friday 9 February, 2024) accused of leading police on a dramatic pursuit through Newcastle West.

Just after 3 yesterday afternoon, Police attempted to stop the driver of a vehicle wanted in relation to alleged domestic violence offences.

Officers began pursuing the car along Hunter Street when the driver failed to stop as directed.

A short time later the black Honda Accord crashed into the corner of a building at the intersection of Florence Avenue.

The driver fled on foot and was quickly arrested.

The 34-year-old is facing Newcastle Local Court today on several charges including domestic violence, assault police, driving, traffic and drug offences.

Second Man Charged Over Alleged Burns Incident At Newcastle West

A second man has been arrested after a man was allegedly set on fire in Newcastle West last month.

Emergency services were called to the McDonalds restaurant in King Street just before 3.30am on Thursday September 28 where a 23-year-old man had sought help after he was allegedly assaulted and set on fire.

He was taken to the burns unit at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man at Raymond Terrace the next day and he remains before the courts.

Following inquiries, a 30-year-old man was arrested at a Rosehill property last Friday.

He's been charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent and throw/lay down etc explosive with intent to maim/do grievous bodily harm.

He's been refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court on December 6.

Two People Arrested Over Alleged Double Stabbing In Newcastle West

A teenager and a woman have been arrested over the alleged stabbing of two Nepalese chefs on a laneway in Newcastle West.

The alleged victims, two men aged  25  and 28 were walking along Devonshire Street at about 3.30am on January 19 when they were set upon by one of three people.

Both suffered stab wounds - one needed surgery for a knife wound to the neck, the other was treated for a badly injured arm.

Newcastle detectives arrested two people at a property on Blue Gum Road at Jesmond at about 12.10am on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old man and 31-year-old woman have been refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court today (Thursday 2 March, 2023) charged with two counts of wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possess unauthorised pistol, and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority..

Plans Underway for New Bike Track Between Adamstown and Newcastle West

City of Newcastle has received funding from the state government to develop a new bike track between Adamstown Station and Newcastle West.

The $110,000 injection will be used to develop a detailed design for the proposed shared track, which will connect the inner-city bypass near William Street to the existing route between Mordue Parade and Wilkinson Avenue. 

The project is one of five city pathways funded by the government's $110 million NSW Get Active program. 

Newcastle Cycleways Movement President Sam Reich, said the cycling community are looking forward to having their say on the project. 

"The funding that's been received from the state government is going to go towards design; investigating the best route and the best treatment on the street," Mr Reich said.  

"The main thing we're always interested in is cycling for utility, cycling for transport; not just recreational riding, but to get people from A to B, from home to the shops, to their schools, or to their workplace." 

The project is part of council's 10-year plan to connect key routes across the city and provide a safe cycling network by 2030. 

A council spokesperson told Newcastle Herald, the public will be consulted during the design process, and Mr Reich said safety should be of utmost concern.  

"We do already have a designated route that takes us into town, but it's on road so it's daunting for less experienced cyclists and for younger cyclists and their families. We're hopeful that all the improvements that are underway in the cycling network, will allow and encourage more people to ride, leaving the cars at home and making it safer for everyone involved." 

He also said local cyclists were looking forward to seeing the wheels in motion. 

"All the improvements we can make to the city cycling network are going to benefit the entire community." 

Plans are underway for a new bike track between Adamstown Station and Newcastle West. 

Cambridge Hotel Listed As COVID Venue Of Concern

NSW Health has advised another popular Newcastle pub is a COVID venue of concern.

Anyone who attended the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle West between 6.30pm last Friday and 2.30am on Saturday is a close contact and must immediately get tested and isolate for 7 days.

All household contacts of close contacts should also be tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received by everyone in the household.

The Cambridge was visited by confirmed cases of COVID-19, and it's likely some of those have the Omicron variant.

It follows a spike in cases linked to the Argyle House Nightclub, a medical ball at NEX on Friday night, and another high risk exposure at Finnegan's Hotel on Darby Street.

Sprinkler Sparks Major Fire Emergency At High Rise Apartments In Newcastle West

A high rise apartment block in Newcastle West has been evacuated after reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue crews responded to an automatic fire alarm at the Aero Apartments on Hunter Street at 6.30pm on Sunday.

Six fire trucks, a ladder platform and a rescue truck were dispatched when members of the public reported smoke coming from a unit on the 11th floor.

Hunter and National Parks Streets were closed as crews set up to fight an expected building fire.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus gained entry to the unit and found a sprinkler had activated on the balcony, sending clouds of fine mist into the air.

Crews re-set the sprinkler and 50 residents were allowed to return to their apartments at about 8.00pm.

 

  

Police Launch Appeal After Woman Assaulted In Newcastle West

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted in Newcastle West.

The 22-year-old left a Hunter Street hotel just after one o'clock on Sunday morning when she was approached by a man who assaulted her on Wood Street before running off.

He's only described as being in his early 20's.

Newcastle detectives want to hear from anyone with information, or who may have seen the man loitering around Wood Street, to come forward.

BREAKING! Crews Battling Large Fire At Newcastle West Rug Store

More than 40 firefighters are battling a large building fire in Newcastle West.

Crews were called to Rahmani's Rug Gallery on Parry Street just before 11.30pm on Monday to find smoke issuing from the two story brick building.

Two aerial appliances have been deployed to fight the fire from above.

Parry Street is closed to traffic between Stewart and Tudor Streets and is likely to remain closed for several hours.

Although the fire has been contained and is not posing a threat to neighbouring properties, Senior Firefighter James Reid says there are concerns the front of the building could collapse into the street.

"The building suffered significant fire damage and some potential structural damage. Crews have established a collapse zone on Parry Street," he said.

Police have establish a crime scene and forensic investigators will start work as soon as the fire is fully extinguished and it's safe to do so.

Man Accused Of Sexually Touching A Child In Newcastle West Granted Bail

A man accused of sexually touching a child at a Newcastle supermarket has been granted bail in a Sydney court.

Police say an 11-year-old girl was with a family member at a shop at Marketown in Newcastle West on Monday 13 July 2020, when its alleged a 49-year-old man sexually touched her.

The man handed himself in at St Mary's Police Station in Sydney's west a few days later.

He faced Penrith Court on Thursday where he was ordered to remain at a Western Sydney address and not to enter Newcastle.

He'll face court again on August 24.

NDIS Apartments Coming to Newcastle CBD

Newcastle West will soon be home to twenty new NDIS approved apartments which will feature wider door frames, hoist infrastructure and bump rails, as well as the latest technology in touch and voice activation. 

Due to lack of suitable housing across Australia 5,905 people under sixty-five with a disability live in aged-care facilities. 

Since March 2017 the NDIS has pushed to remedy the significant gap in the market for specialist disability accommodation with annual recurring funding of $700 million to users who, critically, have control over where they use they live; creating competition for developers. 

Now in an Australia first, development company Thirdi Group has secured wheelchair accessible vehicles to be permanently available for residents of their Newcastle NDIS apartments. 

Purchasing an apartment will also include three-years worth of credit to use with the GoGet carshare service, allowing residents to effectively use the service for free for a number of years and discounted thereafter. 

The vehicles will also be available to the wider public at a standard fare. 

Charges laid over serious assault in Newcastle West

A man has been charged over a serious assault at Newcastle West last Thursday.

A 21-year-old man is accused of punching another young man several times in the head around 3am on King Street.

He was arrested around 3:30 yesterday afternoon at his home in Adamstown.

It's believed an argument broke out in the King Street McDonald's carpark before the assault occurred.

The victim was left with critical head injuries and was rushed to the John Hunter Hospital.

He's since been stabilised but has been left with serious injuries including hearing loss.

Man critical after bashing at Marketown

A man is in a critical condition in the John Hunter Hospital following a serious assault at Marketown Shopping Centre early this morning.

Paramedics were called to King Street around 3:15am to treat a 21-year-old male who sustained facial and head injuries after being punched 3 times.

Police believe a verbal fight may have begun in the King Street McDonalds carpark before things escalated.

They're urging the culprits behind the bashing to hand themselves in, as they've obtained clear CCTV footage of the incident.
