BREAKING! Teenager Arrested After Crashing Into Parked Cars And A House At Adamstown Heights

BY IAN CROUCH

A teenager is expected to be charged after crashing an allegedly stolen car during a pursuit at Charlestown overnight.

Police spotted a Nissan X-TRAIL, which had earlier been reported stolen from Belmont, travelling at speed on the Pacific Highway just before midnight on Thursday and began following the vehicle when the driver failed to stop.

The car failed to negotiate a left hand bend on Madison Drive at Adamstown Heights, crashing into 3 parked cars and a house.

A 19-year-old male from Windale who was behind the wheel was released and arrested with the help of a police dog as the car caught fire - officers quickly doused the flames.

He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remains there in a stable condition.

He's expected to be served a court attendance notice for Police Pursuit, Stolen Vehicle, Unlicensed Driving and having goods in custody suspected of being stolen.

Newcastle Council Plants Hundreds of New Trees, Children Encouraged to Write Love Letter to Favourite One

BY ISABEL EVERETT

Hundreds of trees have been planted along local streets as part of Newcastle Council's Living Streets Program to expand the City’s urban forest.

The Council has been capitalising on Autumn rains, digging holes on street verges and reserves for around 500 trees - 40 different species - across Wallsend, Adamstown and Adamstown Heights ( full list of streets).

Around 1,000 street trees will be planted this year as part of the City’s commitment to deliver cleaner air, reduced storm water runoff, habitat for local biodiversity, more shade and a cooler urban environment.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, who joined City staff to plant trees along Tyrrell Street Wallsend today, said autumn offered the perfect weather for new plantings and that today’s work followed a council decision to join a global initiative aimed at enhancing nature in and around cities.
“While most community requests for tree plantings come during Summer when we are all feeling the need for more trees, Summer isn’t the ideal time to plant and establish trees,” Councillor Nelmes said.

“The weather conditions are more favorable at this time of year as it’s cooler and more rain is about."
“We know a five per cent increase can reduce summer temperatures by one to two degrees, and that 17 trees will offset the use of one car a year in terms of carbon emissions."
Council’s City Greening Services team will complete regular maintenance of the new trees, among 6,000 recently planted across the local government area, carrying out mulching, weeding, watering and formative pruning.
The City is running a series of education activities in conjunction with tree planting, encouraging children during the COVID-19 lockdown to observe animals that visit their favourite tree and write a love letter to it.
Ward 4 Councillor Jason Dunn said kids were invited to submit a letter and photo of the tree to naturalconnection@ncc.nsw.gov.au to encourage conservatory thinking and see which trees are the most popular across the local government area.
“We want kids to take a moment to visit their favourite tree and stop, watch and listen and then write to us about how many different animals visit the tree, how long they think it’s been here and what could be lost if it was cut down," Councillor Dunn said.
“As well as planting trees, we want to educate the next generation about how native and non-native trees support a huge amount of life in urban environments."

Convicted Child Rapist Brett Hill To Appeal Severity Of Sentence

BY IAN CROUCH

Convicted sexual predator, Brett Hill is set to challenge the severity of his gaol sentence.

The 49-year-old was sentenced in December to a minimum of 17 years behind bars for the repeated rape of an 11-year-old girl over 5 hours at Adamstown Heights in June 2018.

It means Hill is not due for release until at least June 2035 when he'll be 64 years old.

Fairfax reports 6 days after his sentence was handed down, Hill's lawyers filed a notice of intention to appeal.

His lawyers have six months to file the actual appeal and will then need to prove the sentence handed to Hill was manifestly excessive.

Labor Says Roads Funding Re-Announced In The Hunter

BY IAN CROUCH

The state government has been caught out re-announcing funding for a roads commitment made in the Hunter 4 years ago.

The Berejiklian government has announced $12 million will be spent to ease traffic congestion at two pinch points on the Pacific Highway at Northcott Drive, Adamstown Heights and Kahibah Road at Highfields.

However, Charlestown MP, Jodie Harrison says it's an exact repeat of a commitment made by former Premier Mike Baird in 2015 and there's not been a single shovel on site at either of these locations in 4 years.

Child Sexual Assault Offender Remains at Large, Police Urge Vigilance

BY LAUREN FREEMANTLE

Police are renewing their plea for information about the sickening sexual assault of an 11-year-old
girl at Adamstown Heights on Tuesday.

While crime scenes have been established at Hudson Park and a nearby Scout Hall, police believe someone may have seen the offender and victim while in transit in a red Holden Commodore with red wheel inserts.

It's unknown what bushland the girl was driven to between the initial assault around 9:15 at Hudson Park and her release at 2:15 at Kotara Railway Station.

While no breakthroughs have been made thus far, the public is being assured no stone is being left unturned to find the attacker, who's described as chubby with messy brown hair, stained teeth and smelling of body odour and cigarettes.

Sex Crimes Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec said every avenue of enquiry is being looked into and officers are doorknocking, patrolling the streets.

"We are extremely focused and committed to finding this person responsible," he said.

"I share the public's concerns - it's worrying that this person was able to carry out this horrendous crime in broad daylight on a young girl.

"We are throwing every piece of available resource we have at this investigation," Superintendent Kerlatec said.

In the meantime, parents and schools are being reminded to re-enforce the stranger danger message with children.

"Until we find this person I'd be more vigilant than ever," John Kerlatec concluded.
