BY IAN CROUCH and JESSICA ROUSE

A new report from the NRMA shows that while the number fatal car accidents in the Hunter is falling, the number of serious injuries is rising.

The motoring giant has put a dollar figure on the true cost of road crashes showing they're costing the region's economy more than half a billion dollars a year.

The Cost of Crashes report found more people are being treated for serious injuries in hospital, and the number continues to be on the rise.
