30 staff have been evacuated after a fire broke out in a Lake Macquarie supermarket.
Fire crews from Belmont and Tingira Heights were called to the Woolworths store in Belmont Central at about 10.00pm on Tuesday to find a fire had started in a stairway, activating the sprinkler system.
Newcastle Fire Command says 12 firefighters took about two hours to fully extinguish and mop up the fire, which was confined to the internal stairway.
The staff were then allowed to return to work.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
