East Maitland man to face court after Aboriginal flag theft

BY DAKOTA TAIT

An East Maitland man will face court on Friday after allegedly stealing an Aboriginal flag from Maitland Police Station in August.

A representative from the Mindaribba Aboriginal Land Council laid a floral arrangement and an Aboriginal flag at Maitland Police Station on Wednesday 24 August 2022, as a tribute to the late Chief Inspector Tony Townsend.

It's alleged, the flag was stolen on Thursday 1 September 2022.

CCTV footage showed two men visiting the station around 6:45pm, one who went inside and a second man who allegedly removed the flag and concealed it in his jacket, before both men left.

A 60-year-old man was arrested just before 3pm on Thursday at Victoria Street Station.

He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with larceny, and refused bail to appear the following day.

The Aboriginal flag has been recovered and is set to be returned to display.
