Woman Shot Dead At Maitland

UPDATE:

A 58 year old Taree Man is expected to be charged with one count of murder later this afternoon in Maitland Local Court.

The man was arrested at gunpoint by police after a leaving the Bella Street house with a rifle.

It's believed the couple were an estranged husband and wife with a history of domestic violence.

The deceased's daughter was at the scene but was unharmed and comforted by police following the incident.

Central Hunter and LAC commander Superintendent Craig Jackson praised the actions of the police involved.

"They arrived at a very dangerous situation with an offender armed with a rifle and they were able to affect his arrest without any further violence".

A man has been taken into custody following the shooting death of a woman at Maitland this morning.

Around 3.20am, emergency services were called to reports of shots fired at a home on Bella Street at Horseshoe Bend.

Police arrived and surrounded the home.

A 60-year-old man existed the property and was arrested - he's currently assisting police with their inquiries.

A second woman, aged in her 30's was also at the home but was not injured.

Police say the man and the shooting victim were known to each other.
