Maitland's colourful character Trevor "Coxy" Cox has sadly died.
The 60-year-old had been living as a homeless man in the Maitland area for the last 30 years, but police were alerted to his death this morning after his body found at a local caravan park at around 10am.
Police say the circumstances surrounding his death are not suspicious.
Police were saddened to hear of his death and were appealing for information from the public on his next of kin. This afternoon with the help of the public and the media, they were able to track them down.
Mr Cox has been described as being larger than life, and was spotted frequently greeting shoppers near Westpac Bank in Maitland.
In 2013 there were concerns Mr Cox had disappeared, with many locals contacting Fairfax media at the time worried about where he was. Thankfully though he was spotted alive and well and was back greeting locals.
Tributes have been pouring in on social media with many describing Mr Cox as a true gentleman and saying that Maitland won't be the same without him.

Man charged with More than A Dozen Offences after Running Down Another Man

A man has been charged with 13 offences after he allegedly ran down another man during a per-arranged meeting in Oakhampton on Saturday night.
Police say the 27-year-old driver went to meet with a 38-year-old man at about 6:30pm on Oakhampton Road. Officers were told the driver, the younger man, deliberately ran down the other man, allegedly hitting him with the car several more times before fleeing from the scene.
The older man was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was released yesterday.
Police initiated an investigation and yesterday arrested the 27-year-old at a home on Bligh Street, Telarah. They also seized an unlicensed firearm from the home.
He was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with more than a dozen offences including stalk/intimidate intend fear physical, fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury, possess unregistered firearm - prohibited firearm, possess unauthorised firearm, armed with intent to commit indictable offense.
The 27-year-old will face Maitland Local Court today.

Police on the Hunt for man who Robbed East Maitland Bank armed with a Firearm

Investigations are continuing into an armed robbery at the East Maitland branch of the Maitland Mutual bank.
Police say just after 9:30 yesterday morning a man with his face concealed allegedly entered the building on George Street with a firearm threatening staff and demanding money.
He fled with a sum of cash.
The man was seen leaving the area in a white Holden Commodore with distinctive mag wheels driven by another man. The car had no registration plate.
No one was injured during the hold-up.
Police attended establishing a crime scene and also conducted a canvass of the area.
The armed man is described as being approximately 173cm tall and with a thin to medium build. Police haven't given a description of the driver.
Anyone with any information or saw anything is being urged to come forward.

BREAKING! Wanted Man Arrested after Terrifying Pursuit in the Hunter

UPDATE
Police have a wanted man in custody after a lengthy pursuit in the Hunter this morning.
Officers allegedly started to chase a 22-year-old man, who was driving a Mitsubishi Sedan on the Hunter Expressway near Heddon Greta after receiving word of his whereabouts just after 10am and pursued him west, before turning around and heading east on the wrong side of the road.
He stopped and a police car pulled up behind him and before taking off again he allegedly rammed the police car, a Ford Falcon Sedan, which caused the airbags to deploy leaving the two police officers inside with minor injuries. The police car was written off.
The chase continued on the M1 Pacific Motorway to Freemans Waterhole. It's also believed at this point there was a female passenger in the wanted man's car and she jumped out.
The 22-year-old kept going and then stopped again, carjacking another vehicle. The driver of the hijacked car, which is believed to be an Audi, jumped out and is uninjured.
Not long later, police managed to arrest him when he stopped for a third time near Sparks Road and he's been taken into custody.
Investigations are continuing.
EARLIER 11am:
A man is in custody after a police pursuit across the Hunter this morning.
A car was pursued by police first on Newcastle Link Road at Edgeworth, and then onto the Hunter Expressway near Singleton.
The vehicle has now been stopped by police, and investigations are continuing.
Paul from Cessnock was on the road at the time and told 2NURFM News all he could do was quickly move out of the way and hope for the best.
"I moved over quickly to keep right away from him and he just went flying past. It was just awful, very awful. One was very powerless."
EARLIER:
There have been reports of a car driving on the wrong side of the Hunter Expressway - heading towards Singleton in the southbound lane driving north.
Witnesses say they saw the car driving erratically near the Kurri Kurri exit before police attended the scene.
We'll have more details as they come to hand.

Offenders on the run after incidents in Tarro overnight

Maitland Police are investigating a number of incidents overnight they believe are linked to a pair of offenders.
Just after midnight, the Metro service station at Tarro was robbed by a man 6ft tall and of average build wearing a black hoodie covered with a red bandanna.
He didn't produce a weapon, but managed to get away with cigarettes and cash, and fled the scene with the help of an accomplice in a stolen Ford Focus hatchback.
The same vehicle was later found on fire outside the Malliboolah Sports Centre.
The offenders are still on the run, possibly in another stolen vehicle - a Suzuki Swift, which was reported missing not far away at about 5:30 this morning at Tanilba Bay.
Investigations are continuing.

Police Investigate Attempted Robbery At Telarah

Maitland Police are searching for a shirtless man who punched and tried to rob a defenseless man at Telarah.
A 24-year-old man was walking across Telarah Oval at about 8.40pm last night when he was approached by an unknown man.
He demanded cash before punching the victim in the face - the 24-year-old managed to run from the area and called police.
The alleged offender is described as being in his early 20's with a thin build, about 175 centimetres tall and was last seen wearing only black shorts and no shirt.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

UPDATE: Central Hunter LAC raids in Abermain

Several people will front Maitland Local Court today after numerous search warrants in the Abermain area were carried out yesterday.
48 police from the Central Hunter Local Area Command's Strike Force Oleria searched properties in Abermain, Weston and Chisholm at around 8:15 yesterday morning.
Strike Force Oleria have been investigating the supply of prohibited drugs since October this year, and carried out six search warrants and six crime scene warrants in relation to prohibited drug operations.
Among those arrested were five men aged 21, 55, 31, and two 23 year old as well as a 33 year old and 20 year old woman - all arrested with drug and firearm charges. One 51 year old woman is being questioned.
Charges included supply prohibited drug - large commercial quantity, supply prohibited drug - indictable quantity, possess shortened firearm and possess prohibited pistol.
Police allegedly located and seized numerous items including a handgun, two 12 gauge shotguns, an air rifle, a sawn off .22 rifle, a shortened .22 calibre rifle, assorted ammunition, an extendable baton, an amount of methylamphetamine, cannabis leaf, a number of mobile phones, laptop computers, storage devices, a Honda 125cc motorcycle, and personal documentation.

Man Faces Court After Thornton House Search

A man is expected to face Maitland Local Court today, following the execution of a search warrant at a property in Thornton.
Police searched the Campden Street property around 8am yesterday morning seizing a number of items including a "single-shot pen gun".
The 39-year-old offender was arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station.
The man was charged with supply large commercial quantity of prohibited drug, three counts of possess prohibited drug, possess unregistered firearm, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit, and possess prohibited weapon.
He was refused bail.

Minister does nothing about Aboriginal death in custody

Minister for Aborignal Affairs Leslie Williams admits she has made no efforts to reach out to the family of Rebecca Maher, the Aboriginal woman who died while in police custody at Maitland Police Station earlier this year.
Rebecca Maher is the first Aboriginal to die in police custody in 16 years.
The Minister and her department has neglected to contact Rebecca Maher's family since her death on the 19th of July beyond offering her "sincere condolences" via the media.
The Minister has also failed to contact any relevant bodies such as the Aboriginal Legal Service and the Aboriginal Land Council, and is yet to speak with the Minister of Police on the matter.
Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison has slammed the Minister for her inaction, questioning Ms. William's claims that she is an advocate for Aboriginal people in NSW.
"The Minister's behaviour shows a truly disgraceful lack of regard for the dignity of this woman" said Ms. Aitchison.
"To see the first Aboriginal death in custody in NSW in 16 years is so significant and that's just why it's unbelievable she hasn't actually done anything."

Calls For Cell Death Inquiry

There are calls for an independent inquiry into the death of an Aboriginal woman while in police custody at Maitland.
Rebecca Maher was placed in a holding cell on July 19 after reportedly appearing intoxicated.
The family of 36-year-old is accusing police of failing to follow protocol designed to save lives.
Officers apparently didn't alert the Aboriginal Legal Service as required when she was arrested.
NSW Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, David Harris says the woman's family deserve answers.
"A thorough investigation must take place immediately to establish why proper protocol wasn't followed," he said.
