A Jetstar flight was delayed 32 minutes at Newcastle airport yesterday afternoon after a passenger tried to take a machete on board.
A 500mm machete was found in a 31-year-old Mayfield man's bag when he passed through security at the airport at about 5:50pm.
The flight headed to Melbourne was meant to leave at 6:30pm, and didn't take off until just after 7pm last night.
The man was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged with a Commonwealth offense of unlawfully carrying a prohibited item.
He was granted bail and will appear in Raymond Terrace court in January, 2018.

Armed robber hands himself in

Allegedly armed with a machete, a man attempted to rob a restaurant at Lake Macquarie overnight, but in the end, he handed himself in.
Police allege just after closing time at 10pm the 21-year-old approached a restaurant on the Pacific Highway near High Street at Belmont.
He tried to gain entry to the building via a closed side entrance and then demanded money from an employee before fleeing empty handed.
Police began investigations, but before long the man handed himself in at Belmont Police Station.
He was arrest and charged with robbery whilst armed with an offensive weapon and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
He faces Newcastle Local Court today.

Two men charged following assault with machete

Two men have been charged following an alleged assault with a machete at Windale in April this year.
It is alleged a 26-year-old man stabbed a 37-year-old man three times during an altercation. The men then went to a home in Windale where a 22-year-old man was already inside armed with a machete.
Police will allege the 22-year-old man struck the 26-year-old man three times with the machete who was then treated at the scene with serious injury before being conveyed to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
The 22-year-old man attended Belmont Police Station for an unrelated matter on 27th June where he was arrested and charged with cause to grievous bodily harm with intent. He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 7 July 2016.
Today, the 37-year-old man was arrested and charged with cause grievous bodily harm with intent. He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today, Wednesday 29 June 2016.
