Fireworks Used to Destroy Merewether Mailboxes

Police believe fireworks were used to blow up mail boxes across Merewether in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Residents of Merewether and nearby Bar Beach were rudely awoken by loud bangs shortly after 4am.

Three letterboxes in Dent, Mitchell and Livingstone Streets were destroyed by the blasts, which sent debris flying and damaged nearby cars and houses.

Around two hours after the first explosion, a Kilgore Street resident found a suspicious item inside their mailbox and reported it to police who safely removed it.

Nobody was injured by the explosions.

Investigations are ongoing and police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity.

Police Investigate Explosion at Redhead Surf Club

 Hoodlums are being blamed for an explosion which ripped the roof off a toilet block at Redhead Surf Club last night.

Fire crews were called to the club just before 10 to find an improvised device involving aerosol cans had been deliberately left in the roof of the adjacent toilet block and exploded.

The blast caused significant damage to the roof and ceiling and also blew out a window.

Police have set up a crime scene and want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area.

House Explosion at Aberdare

A husband and wife have managed to escape unharmed after an explosion occurred in their house at Aberdare this morning.

Police and fire crews were called to the Rawson Street property at about 2.30 where the couple had managed to extinguish a fire sparked by the blast.

Acting Inspector Jerry Bowden says there is reports that a motor vehicle was heard leaving the area at that time.

"While forensic services are currently on scene, Police are certainly treating it as suspicious," he says.

The couple was called in to the local police station for questioning.

Bowden says further investigation is required to figure the extent of the damage and possible motive for the attack.
