Mount Tomaree On Fire

BY IAN CROUCH

A spectacular bush fire has lit up the night sky on the Tomaree Peninsula at Port Stephens.

The fire broke out at about 5.30 yesterday afternoon and has burnt through about 200 square metres of bush to the top of Mount Tomaree.

It's understood no properties are under threat, with the fire listed at Advice level and being controlled.

Police say two helicopters are being brought in this morning to help fight the blaze.

The Tomaree Headland has been closed to the public.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

Man winched to safety at Tomaree Headland

BY JESSICA ROUSE

Earlier this morning the Hunter's Westpac Rescue Helicopter winched a man to safety after he found himself in trouble at Tomaree Headland.

The chopper responded to reports a 65 year old male was spear fishing when he got into difficulties suffering emersion.

He was dragged from the water onto the rocks, where a medical team was winched in.

The patient was stabilised at the scene, winched out, and taken to John Hunter Hospital reportedly in a stable condition.
