Fire and Rescue NSW: "Keep looking when cooking"!

BY JESSICA ROUSE

NSW Fire and Rescue is urging everyone to "Keep looking when cooking", particularly after an apartment block in Newcastle's west was evacuated overnight due to a cooking misadventure.

Eighty people were evacuated from The Cove apartment block in Bellevue Street when a resident left their chops cooking unattended in the kitchen.

The main focus of the "keep looking when cooking" campaign is to remind everyone to never leave cooking unattended as it's so easy to become distracted and lose track of what you're doing.

Cooking misadventures account for more than 50 per cent of fires which start in homes and NSW Fire and Rescue say the message really is quite simple - watch what you're doing when you're cooking.

"A few moments inattention can lead to very significant consequences with a fire starting very quickly and spreading from the stove top into the kitchen cabinets and elsewhere so we really need people to keep a very close eye on what they're cooking," said Acting Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety Jeremy Fewtrell.

They're also encouraging everyone to think ahead and have a fire blanket nearby in the kitchen and an extinguisher in case the unthinkable happens. If a fire is quite small, the size of a dinner plate for instance, they say the best thing to do is use a fire blanket or extinguisher to put it out but if you're not comfortable ring triple zero immediately.

"The best thing they can do is get themselves and any other residents or occupants in the house out and then call triple zero and request fire and rescue to attend," said Jeremy Fewtrell.

"We also encourage people to have a home escape plan and that's just a quick conversation and a quick sketch and plan amongst your family or the group of people that you are living, about your exit points and how you're going to get out of the house safely and what would be your other path to exit the house."

Eighty people evacuated after apartment fire

Firefighters were called to an apartment block in Newcastle West overnight following reports a fire had broken out.

Newcastle Fire Command say they were called to The Cove apartments in Bellevue Street just after 10pm after worried neighbours reported smoke coming from a unit on the 8th floor.

They say they were unable to alert the resident.

Firefighters forced their way into the apartment to find a 68-year-old man wandering around disoriented.

He was treated for smoke inhalation, and 80 occupants of the apartment block were evacuated.

Police say the man had fallen asleep while lamp chops were cooking on the stove.

Multi-million dollar sporting precinct in the works

BY TYLER FARDELL

A Multi-million dollar sport and recreation complex will be built to service the growing population in Newcastle's West, under a plan set to go before Newcastle Council today.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the long term vision was to create a world class sporting facility in Maryand which would rival National Park in Cooks Hill.

The selected site is 20 hectares of parcel land along Creek road which has been offered to the council by mining group Glencore free of charge.

A 12 million dollar concept design has been drawn up which includes state of the art facilities for soccer, netball, cricket and AFL, with talks about including Tennis courts and a grandstand later down the road.

A masterplan would be developed to link the complex to the sporting facilities at Callaghan, Federal Park and Wallsend through pedestrian pathways.

"This will give us enough land to create an area we can turn into a showpiece of sporting facilities for all of the Western Suburbs of Newcastle" Ms Nelmes said.

Changes on the Horizon for Newcastle's CBD

BY BRIDGET GUNN

The west end of Newcastle is driving a huge boom of construction, with $700 million going towards the new high-rise housing hub.

This project is part of $2 billion going towards construction in the Newcastle area.

These new projects in Newcastle are set to have a combined value of $1.6 billion, and comprise of more than 3,000 apartments including 1,200 in the west end.

Hunter Director of the Property Council of Australia Andrew Fletcher says the construction projects will drive Newcastle's future economic growth.

"The construction projects will mean new jobs for Newcastle, it is extremely positive for the city " says Fletcher.

"We know that we have to cater for something like 10,000 new jobs and 6,000 new residents over the next 15 to 20 years."

Mr Fletcher believes that the state government's willingness to press forward with the light rail proposal in Newcastle has been a strong driving force for the construction projects.

"The government's commitment to the light rail for Newcastle has been the thing that sparked the private sectors interest in the city."
