Work To Begin On Hillsborough Road Upgrade

The long-awaited Hillsborough Road upgrade is set to begin in April.

The project's first stage involves the upgrade of Crockett Street intersection. 

New traffic lights will be installed and 700 metres of the road along Hillsborough Road will be duplicated. 

Early site establishment activities will begin in April, with major construction expected to start in May and take around 18 months to complete, depending on staging arrangements. 

The state government is investing $35 million to complete initial stage, set to be undertaken by Daracon Contractors Pty Ltd. 

The entire project will ultimately upgrade the 1.8 kilometer stretch of road running from the Newcastle Inner City Bypass roundabout to the existing duplication of west Crockett Street. 

Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said the project will assist the thousands of motorists using the road everyday. 

"After years of congestion and frustration for local drivers, we're getting on with the job of delivering real upgrades that make a difference," she said. 

"It's harder to do this work without causing some disruption, but motorists will be pleased when they're seeing there is going to be significant improvements to their daily commute.

"We ask motorists to take care around construction areas and to follow all road signs."

The project was shaped through community feedback, with Transport for NSW consulting on the concept design and environmental assessment in 2022 and publishing the submissions report in August 2023.

First stage of Hillsborough road construction announced

The first stage of a 35 million dollar construction plan for Hillsborough Road at Warners Bay is set to begin construction next year. 

Upgrades to the 1.8 kilometre stretch of road from Newcastle Inner City Bypass roundabout to the existing duplication west of Crockett Street, are expected to take 18 months to complete depending on final staging arrangements. 

Stage one involves upgrades to the Crockett Street intersection, adding a set of traffic lights and duplicating 700 metres of road. 

Charlestown MP, Jodie Harrison has been lobbying for the upgrade since 2016 and says it will improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.

"With population growth, we know that we've had challenges on Hillsborough Road, and not very many years ago we also saw the tragic loss of a young girl. We're really focused on improving the safety and the congestion along Hillsborough Road," she said.

Work currently underway along Hillsborough Road in Warner's Bay now has a date set to be completed, by late June.

Around $4 million has been allocated to complete the upgrades over the next few months, with the aim to improve pedestrian safety around the area.

The changes are long overdue after the fatal accident involving young school-girl, Jade Frith, in 2016 resulting in her death.

Suspected plans will see a new set of traffic lights near the current main round-about along the road, with the induction of wider footpaths and installation of extra traffic lanes.

Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison, is expressing her concern for traffic congestion through each connecting road of the main round-about, causing driver frustration.

"There's also the issue of traffic congestion along Hillsborough Road. This pedestrian safety measure does not account for traffic build-up", she says.

"I'm really hoping, that in the future, there will be a set of traffic lights replacing what is currently the round-about".

The work will provide safer crossing measures for the general public, to prevent accidents of all calibres around the busy area.

Hillsborough Road Upgrades

Plans are underway to upgrade a major stretch of road in Warner's Bay after the famous Hillsborough road has so far claimed over several lives.

The road is now in the spotlight and under pressure as plans of progression for the fixes have failed to meet the deadline for its upgrades.

Local MP’s are imploring the state government to put its plans to improve pedestrian and commuter safety into motion as results of the study were expected to be released late last year.

Around $4 million was allocated in the NSW State Budget papers to plan the widening of Hillsborough road, but Lake Macquarie MP, Greg Piper, is worried the plans have fallen off the radar for priority works to be done.

Piper says, "I'm calling on the State Government to provide the necessary funding for the RMS to start work on that area".

"We really need to make it a priority for pedestrians to cross the roads safely", he says.
