National Tertiary Education Union Members are at State Parliament today protesting at the University of Newcastle's 60th anniversary celebrations.
Members are also striking for 24 hours today, claiming management should not be celebrating while staff are pressured under heavy workloads.
Branch Secretary Terry Summers believes the University can afford to pay academics better.
"Putting a lens on on people who are celebrating what a great job they're doing, when we believe they're not doing a great job," he said.
