The trio then fled in a white Toyota Tarago with green P plates.
The man was taken by ambulance to the John Hunter Hospital where he was treated to a laceration to his forehead.
Detectives are reviewing CCTV and are asking for anyone with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
